Tony Blair: The Humble Acolyte

May 30, 2007 · Filed Under Politics · Comment

We all know we are occasionally guilty of the sin of pride, which is why we should look to the ever-humble procession of the shy and unassuming Tony Blair, as he jets around Africa bidding touching and fond farewells to people who have absolutely no clue as to who he is. This is the devoted servant of his people, almost invisibly making his farewell tour of the world he has loved and protected for so long, paid for, of course, by the willing taxpayers of his great land, who, no doubt, will dig even deeper into their pockets upon his retirement and shower him with money along with the inevitable lavish praises he so richly deserves.

The image is of a little, stunted, wizened Uriah Heep, slithering along and trying to bravely ignore the chants and huzzahs from the crowds who have given up their homes, jobs and families, just to catch a glimpse of this god-king as he passes through their towns and lives, perhaps for the last time. Some voluntarily proffer what little money they have to him, hoping he will continue saving the world for them: others have their money robbed from them before they are taken away and shot. All give praise to the saviour of the world, Tony Blair, as he touches their insignificant little lives for a few moments on this, The Legacy Tour.

As always, however, there are those who just do not understand that Tony Blair can do all this through simple charity and the overflowing goodness of his soul. They have to carp and complain.

The Evening Standard carries this:

Vanity Blair: Tony’s celebrity farewell tour

Officially, it is a statesmanlike progress through Africa, holding talks with influential figures on issues of world importance.

But yesterday, as Tony Blair - accompanied by his wife Cherie - landed in Libya on the first stage of his farewell trip across the continent, his long goodbye was looking more and more like a starstruck celebrity tour.

However, a grateful British public - who are paying for the trip - will doubtless be pleased to hear that no detail of the Premier’s style and grooming is apparently to be lost to posterity.

For it emerged that among his entourage are a writer and two photographers from the glossy American fashion magazine Men’s Vogue.

[...]

Shadow Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: “Tony Blair seems to have abandoned being Prime Minister and the hard-pressed taxpayer is having to fund his vanity tour of the world, which is aimed at the next stage of his career.

“He seems more concerned about how he looks in Vogue than tackling real issues at home. It’s time we brought an end to this farce.”

Yes, there you see the words of the green eyed monster: jealousy. Tony Blair is a fashion icon as well as an almost-ex-Prime Minister as well as a demi-god and intellectual heavyweight. No wonder Mr Tony makes other people green with envy!

Tony Blair’s Africa Success

The Christian Monitor of Freetown Sierra Leone, where Tony Blair is just checking to see that he has saved the population from poverty and corruption celebrates his arrival and tells the world that all is A-OK with everything that has happened there on Mr Tony’s watch:-

A success story that is blighted by corruption, chronic governance issues, poverty, massive youth unemployment, the list seems endless. An enormous number of the Sierra Leone populace still go to bed hungry despite the massive assistance by Britain and other development partners to help salvage a beleaguered people from the shackles of poverty and other forms of depression. People in the East End part of the city still go for days without water supply. Power supply in that part is almost non-existent as residents rely heavily on standby generators – that is, for those who can afford such luxury. For the rest of the city of Freetown people count themselves lucky to receive electricity for a few hours once every fortnight.

LibDems Reject Tony Blair’s Police State

The LibDems seem to think that the people of Britain will not want Tony Blair’s police state! How far from reality can you get?

Blair and Reid pushing for powers of police state - Clegg

29 May 2007

Responding to reports that the Government is considering introducing ‘stop and question’ powers, as well as Tony Blair’s comments on civil liberties today, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Clegg MP said:

“Tony Blair and John Reid are clearly determined to leave office in a blaze of headlines. But their increasing determination to go out talking tough will leave a trail of half truths, rushed laws and unhelpful controversy behind.

“Pushing for the powers of a police state is probably the best guarantee for increased radicalism in exactly those communities where we need cooperation to defeat terrorism.

“Equally, breathless finger pointing at the opposition and the judiciary to explain the flawed control order regime is factually illiterate.

“There have been no court cases determining the precise controls imposed in low-level control orders to which the three escapees of last week were subject. As Tony Blair admits today there is no reason why they simply could not have been subject to greater surveillance from the police and intelligence services from the start.

“What we need is less finger pointing, fewer headlines and a more considered approach to the grave threat that faces us all.”

It is hard to imagine how churlish and ungrateful people can be. You can bet that if the idea for a British police state had occurred to the Lib Dems or the Conservatives when they were in power, they would not be nit-picking about it now. Equally, if the New Labour Project’s wheels fall off at the next election, will the new Tory or Lib Dem government repeal the police state legislation when in power, or will they polish up their jackboots and strut their Stasi stuff?
