Gordon Brown: Would You Buy A Used Car From This Man?
Oh, dear. It looks like grumpy (except when smiling artificially for the cameras) Gordon Brown has finally broken that magical “moral compass” he has been fiddling with all these months.
Remember when his pal, the intellectually-challenged Tony Blair, said that his government was going to be purer than pure? That came back to haunt him when everyone could see it was an administration drowning in the sludge of sleaze.
Apparently, Gordon Brown let it be known that his shiny new government was not going to be controlled by spin - another nail in the coffin of Tony Blair’s government (did he ever find his legacy, by the way?) - but it now seems that old habits die hard and New Labour just cannot manage to be honest, however hard it apparently tries.
This time we have yet another Home Secretary, if not exactly telling whopping great lies, then at least, it would seem, trying very hard not to tell the whole truth, m’lud.
We all know that in this fine land of “Great” Britain, the best thing the government can do with anyone who looks the wrong way at one of the several million (soon to be) ‘listening’ cameras that track the every move of every citizen, is to send them straight to jail. The problem is that this means the prisons get overcrowded, so the Home Office just opens the gates and lets everyone out. When they are not doing that, they are giving jobs which should demand a high level of security clearance to anyone who is actually in the country illegally.
Hang on! That sounds like a major blunder! Yes, it is, actually, which is why the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith tried very hard to keep it a secret, perhaps just between herself and the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, who is the chap who claimed the era of spin died with the humiliating exit of his predecessor, Tony Blair, ex-celebrity Prime Minister and ex-spinmeister extraordinaire.
The Daily Mail has this:
Jacqui Smith is due to give a statement to the Commons today after being accused of trying to cover up yet another Home Office blunder.
Leaked documents revealed that the Home Secretary was warned four months ago that thousands of illegal immigrants had been cleared to work in sensitive Whitehall security jobs.
But she accepted advice from her officials for a news blackout on the affair, secret memos have confirmed.
Earlier today, David Cameron demanded Jacqui Smith face MPs over the scandal.
Mr Cameron told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I think there are some really big questions for the Home Secretary to answer and she needs to come to the House of Commons today and give a statement and answer those questions.
“In particular, I think the real problem for the Government here is that it looks like they put the convenience of when they wanted to announce things to the press and Government spin … ahead of public safety and telling the public what was happening.”
The scandal broke only at the weekend, when it emerged that one worker was even sent to guard Gordon Brown’s car, while 11 more were at Scotland Yard.
The revelation raised a major question mark over Mr Brown’s commitment to greater openness in Government.
Meanwhile, The Guardian says:
The problem in this case lies in the cover-up. The leaked emails confirm that despite this being the age of freedom of information a deep-seated “don’t reveal anything unless you have to” spin culture continues to exist at the very heart of government.
The Home Office press office is revealed to be steeped in paranoia about its already heavily damaged reputation:
“There will be significant criticism of the Home Office and our processes. They are likely to refer back to other Home Office so-called ‘blunders’, which adversely affected coverage of the department last year and earlier this … Despite corrective action being taken, any announcement about illegal migrant workers … would not be presented by the media as a positive story.”
As one departmental source said today: “Well just because we are paranoid, doesn’t mean they are not out to get us.”
So, is Gordon Brown’s new New Labour government populated by honest, upright citizens, always ready to uphold the interests of the people and stand proud on the moral high ground?
Oh, look, look! A flock of geese flying past being led by none other than P-p-p-porky Pig!
Nah, Gordon Brown is the same moral flibbertigibbet as the other character - what was his name? - you know, the one who lost his legacy because he just couldn’t tell the truth. It’s on the tip of my tongue. Timmy someone…
