End Of World To Be Kept Secret

Whatever your personal view, just imagine for one minute that the world is at a critical point in terms of climate change and we are at the tipping point of being able to save the planet.

If this were the case would you:

a. Want to be informed so that everything which could be done was done.

b. Want the wool pulled over your eyes and lies to be told so that there was no hope for anyone.

c. Want free ice cream made compulsory.

d. Want to carry on just as before.

There is a small clue in the idea that the world has never come to an end before, so either clinging to the way that things have been done in the past or pretending that nobody will notice are probably not going to hold water for very long.

In ten years’ time, if the scientists all agree that we could have done something to save the planet, but we left it too late, will you be saying: “Ah, yes, that is as may be, but I for one am damned glad the BBC maintained its impartiality. If it had let that slip, where would we have been?”

The Observer:

The editor of Newsnight doesn’t think it’s the BBC’s job ‘to save the planet’. The head of TV news reckons that a ‘Planet Relief’ day would transgress the corporation’s sacred ‘impartiality’ guidelines. Accordingly, after a little internal pondering, there will be no Relief - and precious few thanks - as Friends of the Earth vent their frustration and another media ‘row’ breaks out.

The Telegraph:

Planet Relief was going to be a day-long special on BBC1 dedicated to the proposition that global warming is largely man-made, and to telling us what we should all do to stop it. It has just been scrapped.

The green lobby is furious, and a lot of other people are thoroughly perplexed.

A couple of years ago, the BBC appeared to endorse Live 8 and its campaign to “Make Poverty History”. What, wonder many of the puzzled, is so different about a campaign to combat global warming - a campaign that is now supported by the majority of scientists?

It is nice to know that the squabbles of pipsqueaks, penpushers and jobsworths will trump a global calamity and the peabrained men in suits will be calculating the number of angels dancing on a pin-head while the world around them burns.
