Sydney, Australia – November 23, 2014 – A less than a week old newborn baby was found in a 9 ft deep storm drain after being thrown by the baby’s mother.
Incredibly, the baby boy had managed to survive 5 days without any sustenance of food and water. What’s even more amazing is that the baby survived even when the temperature was above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
David Otte along with his 18 year old daughter, Hayley, were passing by when they heard something underneath the storm drain. At first, they thought it was a cat but they were surprised upon realizing that it was a baby instead. They immediately called the local police.
He said that the baby was obviously in distress and that if he and his daughter hadn’t heard the baby’s crying then he would not have survived another day.
It took 3 men and 3 police officers to open up the concrete slab that leads down to the drains. Police have alleged that the baby had been there since Tuesday and was wrapped in a blanket that is commonly used in hospitals.
Local authorities have located the mother and had taken her under custody through the hospital documents. The police said that the baby’s birth appeared to have evidence of medical care and through investigation and the hospital documents, were able to locate her.
The 30 year old mother, whose name hasn’t been revealed, is scheduled to appear in court on Friday without bail. Unfortunately, the mother did not appear on the date, instead, an attorney was there to represent her. However, his party did not apply for bail.
The baby is currently at Westmead Hospital under serious but stable condition.
This case is one of many around the world. Many new mothers are abandoning their babies in ditches, dumps, and storm drains. They have a lot of reasons for doing so but none of them are ever going to be valid enough to take the life of an innocent child.
Babies are proven to survive 24 to 48 hours without much feeding but this case had proven miraculous because the baby was able to endure 6 days without having any food or water.
